Regular weeding is vital to reduce competition around maturing Asparagus. Asparagus is a wetland plant, so keeping moisture levels consistent is a must. A good layer of mulch will not only minimise competition and help retain soil moisture, but will also provide nutrients as it breaks down.

Restricting light develops sought-after white stems. It’s as easy as covering the plant completely and thickly (about 30cm) with a loose straw-based mulch.
